FACE-IT at the Greenland Science Week 2023
06 to 09 November 2023
A diverse group of FACE-IT colleagues attended at the 3rd Greenland Science Week 2023 in Nuuk from 6 to 9 November 2023. It was a great week with many interesting workshops, seminars, outreach events and talks. FACE-IT research was represented by two science talks from dear colleagues of the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources (GINR) and co-organized two large workshops. Furthermore, our colleague Carina Ren (Aalborg University) was one of the main organizers of the Greenland Science Week.
Talks featuring FACE-IT research
- Thomas Juul Pedersen: “Marine biological hotspots along the continental slopes between Greenland and Canada”
- Tobias Vonnahme: “Challenges and opportunities of Remote Sensing for exploring Greenland’s marine phytoplankton”
Workshop “Sustainable development of Arctic cruise tourism”
On Monday, 06 November, a workshop with more than 60 participants (present and online), organized by Carina Ren (Aalborg University), focused on the sustainable development of Arctic cruise tourism. Lill Rastad Bjørst (Aalborg University) presented on the impact of cruise in Ilulissat during and after Covid-19 and contributed in a panel debate. FACE-IT member Nora Diehl (University of Bremen) and many members of our partner project ECOTIP participated as well.

1st biennial Greenland Marine Research Seminar
Thomas Juul Pedersen Greenland Institute of Natural Resources (GINR) organized the first Greenland Marine Research Seminar with about 70 participants. The seminar brought together local stakeholders with three large marine research projects in Greenland – FACE-IT, ECOTIP and the Davis Straight Observatory System. The aim was to understand climate and biodiversity changes in the Arctic. Nora Diehl (University of Bremen) and Lill Rastad Bjørst (Aalborg University) presented the FACE-IT project and main Greenlandic findings in a short talk. An open discussion moderated by Thomas Juul Pedersen discussed questions and wishes from Greenlandic stakeholders. Further FACE-IT participants were: Tobias Vonnahme (Greenland Institute of Natural Resources GINR), Carina Ren (Aalborg University), Jenný Stefánsdóttir (Greenland Institute of Natural Resources GINR), and Christian Detsch (University of Bremen). Furthermore, many members of our partner project ECOTIP participated as well.
