Xiamen University has long-standing expertise in studying the microbial community in high Arctic fjord systems. Because of their fast responses, changes in microbial diversity can be regarded as a very sensitive indicator to detect environmental variation at an early stage. Thus, microbial diversity will be taken as a proxy for emerging perturbations. Thus, Xiamen University is an important contributor to the research conducted biodiversity and ecosystem function changes.
